"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: The sender also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Several high-profile fans have also begged for the role.

One thing is obvious something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a close unit. Their videos repeatedly feature them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"So everyone is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Award Nod

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes follow breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed confidence called for a new sound – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

One man left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international audience.

But the band will consistently be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
