Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the option to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
